How We’re Building Work Around Carter’s Strengths

When I started Carter & Crew Creative, I knew I could not begin with a traditional job description.

I had to begin with Carter.

That meant asking a different set of questions.

• What feels manageable?
• What can be repeated?
• What can be supported?
• What can be done in short sessions?
• What creates a real product without creating unnecessary pressure?

Those questions are shaping how I build Carter’s meaningful-work journey.

Starting Small on Purpose

Carter & Crew Shop began with simple, small-batch products: buttons, magnets, keychains, and other joyful everyday items.

That was intentional.

Small products allow us to break the work into clear steps. Some steps can be done with Carter’s direct participation. Some require support. Some are handled by the rest of the crew.

Instead of measuring success by speed or independence, we are paying attention to participation, comfort, consistency, and dignity.

For us, meaningful work does not have to look like doing every step alone.

It can look like being part of a real process in a way that fits.

What Supported Work Looks Like Here

In our small production process, supported work may include things like:

• Preparing materials
• Placing or organizing product pieces
• Participating in button or magnet production
• Helping with simple repeated steps
• Checking finished items
• Being part of packaging or order preparation

Some days Carter may participate more.

Some days less.

That is part of building work around a person instead of forcing a person into a fixed system.

We are learning to pay attention to timing, energy, sensory needs, communication, and environment. If something is not working, we adjust. If a task becomes too much, we pause. If a step works well, we build from there.

Support Does Not Make the Work Less Real

One thing we want to be very clear about is this:

Support does not make Carter’s participation less meaningful.

Many people use support at work. Some use technology. Some use reminders. Some use adapted tools. Some use job coaches, routines, checklists, or environmental changes.

Carter’s support may look different, but the principle is the same.

The goal is not to pretend everything is independent. The goal is to create real opportunities with honest support.

That is why I am careful with the phrase Built by Carter.

When you see that mark, it means Carter had an authentic and meaningful role in the product or production process. It does not mean he completed every step alone. It means the work was designed around his participation.

What We Are Learning

We are still early in this process, but a few things are already becoming clear.

• Simple matters.
• Predictable steps help.
• Short sessions work better than long ones.
• The environment matters.
• The right support can change what is possible.
• Most importantly, contribution can look different and still be valuable.

This is not a perfect model. It is not a one-size-fits-all answer. It is one family learning out loud as we build something meaningful around Carter’s strengths and needs.

Why I’m Sharing This

Inspired by Carter exists because families need more examples of what adulthood, participation, and meaningful work can look like when support is designed thoughtfully.

Not every family will start a shop.

Not every person will enjoy making products.

Not every idea will work the same way for everyone.

But sometimes seeing one adapted model makes it easier to imagine another.

That is what I hope this space becomes: a place to share practical ideas, honest lessons, and real examples of building around what is possible.

A Small Beginning

Carter’s work journey is beginning in small batches.

A few buttons.

A few magnets.

A few repeated steps.

A little more confidence in what can be created when we start with the person first.

It may look small from the outside.

But to us, it is a very meaningful beginning.
