What ‘Built by Carter’ Means

You may see the phrase Built by Carter on some of our products, packaging, and shop materials.

It is a simple phrase, but it means something very specific to us.

It does not mean Carter completes every step independently. It does not mean the process looks the same every time. It does not mean support is absent.

For our family and Carter & Crew Creative, Built by Carter means Carter had an authentic and meaningful role in the product or production process, with support designed around his strengths, energy, and needs.

Built Around Participation

When we started Carter & Crew Creative, we were not trying to create a traditional job and then fit Carter into it.

We were trying to ask a better question:

What could meaningful work look like if it was built around Carter?

Instead of asking whether Carter could do an entire task from start to finish, we started asking:

• What step can he participate in?
• What tools make the task manageable?
• What support helps without taking over?
• What pace works best?
• What environment feels calm enough to try?
• What parts of the process are real, repeatable, and respectful?

Those questions became the foundation for Built by Carter.

Support Is Part of the Process

Carter is nonverbal and has significant support needs. Support is not an exception to the work. It is part of how the work is designed.

Sometimes support looks like preparing materials ahead of time, setting up the button machine, helping Carter position pieces safely, slowing down, pausing, or ending a work session before it becomes too much.

Sometimes it means the rest of the crew completes steps Carter does not do.

That does not make Carter’s participation less meaningful. It makes the process honest.

Why We Are Careful With the Phrase

We do not want to use Carter’s name or story in a way that feels unclear, exaggerated, or unfair to him.

That is why Built by Carter is not just a cute label. It is a commitment.

When we use that phrase, we want it to mean:

• Carter was part of the process in a real way;
• the task was adapted around his participation;
• support was provided where needed;
• the product was finished with care;
• the story was shared respectfully; and
• we are not implying independence when support was involved.

We believe supported work can still be real work. We believe participation can be meaningful even when it looks different. We believe dignity matters more than making the story sound impressive.

What It May Look Like

Built by Carter may look like a short work session. It may look like one step repeated several times. It may look like Carter participating in part of production while someone else prepares materials, checks quality, or packages the finished product.

Some days may go smoothly. Some days may not.

That is part of building work around a real person instead of forcing a person into a fixed idea of productivity.

The Crew Matters Too

The name Carter & Crew is intentional.

This is not only about Carter doing work alone. It is about building a supported process around him.

The crew helps prepare, organize, finish, package, photograph, list, ship, and improve the products. That support allows Carter’s participation to become part of something real and complete.

Meaningful work often happens because the right support system exists around the person. That does not take away from the contribution. It makes the contribution possible.

Not Charity. Not Pity. Real Products With Purpose.

Carter & Crew Shop is not built around pity.

We want people to buy our products because they are joyful, useful, giftable, and made with care. The mission matters, but the products matter too.

The product should stand on its own while also carrying a deeper purpose behind it.

A Small Phrase With a Bigger Meaning

Built by Carter means we are choosing to see possibility differently.

It means making room for supported participation, building around strengths instead of only focusing on limitations, and being honest about support while still valuing contribution.

We are still learning. We are still adapting. We are still building.
