Why We Started With Buttons, Magnets, and Keychains

When we started Carter & Crew, the shop by Inspired by Carter, we knew the first products needed to be simple—not because the work was unimportant or expectations were low, but because we were building a process that could be repeated, supported, adapted, and completed with care.

That is why we began with small-batch buttons, magnets, keychains, and bottle openers. They may look simple from the outside, but they gave us a practical way to build meaningful work around Carter’s strengths, interests, energy, and support needs.

Simple Products Can Still Create Meaningful Work

Meaningful work does not have to begin with a formal job, a long shift, or a complicated task. It can begin with one repeated step, one manageable responsibility, or one genuine way to participate in a real process.

Buttons, magnets, and keychains gave us a concrete starting point. They allowed us to create useful products without requiring every step to be completed independently.

We Needed a Repeatable Process

These products share many of the same production steps:

  • Preparing artwork and printed pieces
  • Organizing supplies
  • Placing components into the machine
  • Pressing or assembling the product
  • Checking finished items
  • Matching products to packaging
  • Preparing orders for shipping

Not every step is Carter’s step. Some parts are completed by Carter, some with support, and some by the rest of the crew. Because the process is repeatable, we can observe what works, adjust what does not, and build a rhythm around Carter’s genuine participation.

Small-Batch Work Gives Us Flexibility

Carter’s energy, attention, regulation, and support needs are not identical every day. Our work cannot depend on long sessions or large production runs.

Small batches let us make a few items at a time, prepare materials in advance, pause when needed, and complete products in stages. That flexibility helps keep the process respectful. The goal is not to push through at any cost. It is to build work that can continue in a way that honors the person doing it.

The Products Are Joyful on Purpose

We wanted the first collection to feel happy. A magnet can brighten a refrigerator or workspace. A keychain can carry a small reminder into everyday life. A button can add encouragement and personality to a jacket, bag, or bulletin board.

The Good Vibes First Run Collection—featuring designs such as Choose Happy, Happy Flower, Classic Smiley, Good Vibes, and Rainbow Joy—was created as a colorful beginning filled with encouragement and purpose.

Starting Small Gives Us Room to Grow

These products allow us to practice organizing materials, following a repeated sequence, participating in production, checking quality, preparing packaging, and building a work routine.

Some skills may grow. Some may remain supported. Others may change over time. We are not measuring success only by independence. We are also paying attention to participation, comfort, consistency, dignity, and purpose.

Small work can still be real work. Supported participation can still be meaningful participation.

Buttons, magnets, and keychains are where we began. They gave us a foundation, and the original collection is still available while we continue learning what Carter & Crew can become.

Made with Joy. Built with Purpose.
